This volume has 41 chapters written to honor the 100th birthday of Mario Bunge. It celebrates the work of this influential Argentine/Canadian physicist and philosopher. Contributions show the value of Bunge’s science-informed philosophy and his systematic approach to philosophical problems. The chapters explore the exceptionally wide spectrum of Bunge’s contributions to: metaphysics, methodology and philosophy of science, philosophy of mathematics, philosophy of physics, philosophy of psychology, philosophy of social science, philosophy of biology, philosophy of technology, moral philosophy, social and political (...) philosophy, medical philosophy, and education. The contributors include scholars from 16 countries. Bunge combines ontological realism with epistemological fallibilism. Computer vision research involving street and road detection methods usually focuses on driving assistance and autonomous vehicle systems. In this context, street segmentation occurs in real-time, based on images centered on the street. This work, on the other hand, uses street segmentation for urban planning research to classify pavement types of a city or region, which is particularly important for developing countries. For this application, it is needed a dataset with images from various locations for each street. These images are (...) not necessarily centered on the street and include challenges that are not common in street segmentation datasets, such as mixed pavement types and the presence of faults and holes on the street. We implemented a multi-class version of a state-of-the-art segmentation algorithm and adapted it to perform street pavement classification, handling navigation along streets and angle variation to increase the accuracy of the classification. A data augmentation approach is also proposed to use preliminary results from the test instances as new ground truth and increase the amount of training data. A dataset with more than 300,000 images from 773 streets from a Brazilian city was built. Our approach achieved a precision of 0.93, showing the feasibility of the proposed application. (shrink)

Quelle est la tâche – plutôt que la contribution – de la philosophie à l’égard du langage? Dans cet article, il s’agit de revisiter la réponse de Paul Ricœur à cette question, à partir de son texte “Philosophie et langage.” Ricœur assigne à la philosophie la tâche de se réapproprier la triple médiation langagière: “chemin” du langage vers monde, “chemin” du langage vers le sujet et “chemin” du langage vers la communauté humaine. Partant de l’expérience concrète des sujets parlants, Ricœur (...) s’oppose à la clôture systémique présupposée par la conception structuraliste du langage, qui suspend la fonction de la référence dans la relation de signification. À partir d’une conception élargie de la référence – qui inclut la fonction poétique du langage –, le philosophe dégage de la notion de “monde du texte” la dimension ontologique constitutive du langage: dans sa fonction poétique, en effet, le langage révèle, selon lui, les possibilités multiples de notre mode d’existence. Nous montrons enfin que c’est à travers la notion d’attestation que Ricœur établit une connexion entre la réouverture de la triple médiation du langage et l’élaboration de cette nouvelle ontologie. Resumo: Este artigo pretende contribuir para a elucidação da nossa compreensão sobre a educação, sobre os fenômenos e processos educacionais, que constituem uma ocupação e uma preocupação humana fundamental. O método que utilizamos nesta pesquisa consistiu, num primeiro momento, de uma análise etimológica da palavra latina educo, da qual derivou a palavra educação em português, e, num segundo momento, da interpretação de alguns sentidos da palavra educo à luz de algumas ideias da filosofia da educação, encontradas em cada um dos (...) quatro períodos da história da filosofia. Concluímos constatando que, através de nossa análise, pudemos contribuir para expandir os limites do nosso conhecimento sobre a educação. Entretanto, a fotografia de duas mulheres zulus, publicada na revista britânica Photographic News em 1879 teve um efeito completamente contrário à famosa pintura de Manet. O presente texto investigará a fascinação exercida pelo exótico, (...) sombrio e mítico na construção da sensibilidade de pensadores e artistas da vanguarda e na representação dos povos não ocidentais, bem como a construção de noções como “arte primitiva” ou mesmo “arte africana” que operaram no interior do discurso modernista sobre a arte, mostrando que modernismo e colonialismo se conectam de forma brutal e surpreendente. Automatized scalable healthcare support solutions allow real-time 24/7 health monitoring of patients, prioritizing medical treatment according to health conditions, reducing medical appointments in clinics and hospitals, and enabling easy exchange of information among healthcare professionals. With recent health safety guidelines due to the COVID-19 pandemic, protecting the elderly has become imperative. However, state-of-the-art health wearable device platforms present limitations in hardware, parameter estimation algorithms, and software architecture. This paper proposes a complete framework for health systems composed of multi-sensor wearable health (...) devices, high-resolution parameter estimation, and real-time monitoring applications. The framework is appropriate for real-time monitoring of elderly patients' health without physical contact with healthcare professionals, maintaining safety standards. The hardware includes sensors for monitoring steps, pulse oximetry, heart rate, and temperature using low-power wireless communication. In terms of parameter estimation, the embedded circuit uses high-resolution signal processing algorithms that result in an improved measure of the HR. The proposed high-resolution signal processing-based approach outperforms state-of-the-art HR estimation measurements using the photoplethysmography sensor. (shrink)

Résumé La poésie est essentiellement liée au silence et peut être conçue dans ce sens comme une sorte de résistance contre le bruit de l’actualité ou de rébellion contre le lieu commun. Àl’affût du son originel qui voyage à travers les cultures, elle s’efforce d’exprimer l’inexprimable. Car la poésie est le jeu des possibilités. En se jouant des possibilités, elle incite l’être humain à habiter son monde différemment.

Résumé La tradition occidentale a toujours été foncièrement anthropocentrique. A travers l’esprit scientifique, l’homme moderne parvient à une sorte de colonisation du reste de la nature, dans laquelle seul son propre bénéfice fait sens. Cette conception est entrée dans une période de crise depuis la seconde moitié du xx e siècle, particulièrement dans le dernier tiers, et l’on assiste au bouleversement de quelques-uns des principes ontologiques constitutifs de l’homme occidental. La philosophie grecque, la tradition judéo-chrétienne, la Renaissance, voilà les trois (...) grands moments de cet anthropocentrisme ; le quatrième étant l’homme comme dominateur de la nature et du cosmos. Depuis la seconde moitié du xx e siècle, cette situation produit une contre-conscience, la conscience d’ hybris de l’anthropocentrisme occidental, la conscience d’avoir transgressé toute limite et toute frontière avec l’autodestruction par le biais de la bombe atomique. La double posture d’orgueil et de chute dans l’ hybris constitue le grand fond philosophique des débats éthiques, politiques, idéologiques qui accompagnent actuellement le domaine de la biologie et de la génétique dans ses évolutions. Cela étant, est-il possible à l’homme, en termes philosophiques, intellectuels et artistiques, de dépasser l’anthropocentrisme? Oui, par l’auto-contention, l’antique sofrosyne, qui réclamait la mesure face à l’ hybris. Mais l’homme occidental craint le dépassement de l’anthropocentrisme, l’idée que l’homme n’est rien lui faisant peur (le froid pancosmique). Une voie intermédiaire est souhaitable : il faudrait récupérer la conscience d’un certain animisme, récupérer l’âme du monde. (shrink)

RESUMO O objetivo deste artigo é apresentar, tomando por referência a filosofia de Henri Bergson e a fisiologia experimental de Claude Bernard, dois esforços análogos, ainda que sem relação direta em suas origens, em face de imperativos que se colocam ao sujeito do conhecimento que se ocupa da vida. Tentaremos mostrar, autorizados pelo próprio Bergson, no interior de determinada prática científica representada pela fisiologia experimental de Claude Bernard, uma atitude diante dos fatos orgânicos que não é o monopólio de uma (...) filosofia que se ocupa da verificação das condições e dos limites do conhecimento da vida, problemática que, na filosofia francesa do século XX, encontra em L’Évolution créatrice uma expressão incontornável. ABSTRACT The purpose of this article is to present, taking as reference Henri Bergson’s philosophy and Claude Bernard’s experimental physiology, two analogous efforts, despite a lack of direct relation in terms of their origins, resulting from some obligations posed to the subject of knowledge who takes life as a matter of theoretical analysis. Authorized by Bergson himself, we will try to show, within a scientific practice represented by Claude Bernard’s experimental physiology, an attitude towards organic facts that is not the monopoly of a philosophy which seeks to elucidate the conditions and limits of life knowledge, a theoretical problem which, in the twentieth century French philosophy finds in the Creative Evolution its essential expression. Este artículo resume la historia de las relaciones entre la sociedad y la universidad, y establece analogías entre la crisis entre 1900 y 1910, primer Centenario de la Independencia, y la que comienza a incubarse en 1997; y luego analiza el rol de los movimientos estudiantiles en los cambios en la sociedad política y también en la universidad, en especial, (...) la reforma universitaria de Córdoba, (1918), y la chilena, (1967). Dopo aver studiato l’argomento della divisione delle scienze speculative in Aristotele e Boezio, riprendiamo la marcia della nostra ricerca presentando il pensiero di Avicenna al riguardo. Bisogna ammettere l’importanza del suo contributo per lo sviluppo della filosofia, e in modo particolare la metafisica, nell’occidente medievale, senza il quale non si può cogliere la continuità e i cambiamenti progressivi nelle diverse edizioni di questa scienza regina del sapere razionale umano. Avicenna insisterà a ragione nell’importanza del subiectum scientiae per stabilire la divisione (...) delle scienze speculative, e metterà in rilievo il soggetto proprio della metafisica, cioè l’ente in quanto ente. In un altro contesto, vedremo come Avicenna parlerà dei diversi gradi di astrazione nelle varie facoltà conoscitive, ma senza mettere questa dottrina in rapporto con la questione della divisione delle scienze, come invece faranno successivamente altri autori, confondendo forse questi due livelli di riflessione. Tras postular que la democracia nunca ha predominado en la historia universal y nacional a pesar de su buena reputación, el autor desarrolla un contrapunto en el Centenario de la Independencia y en la actualidad, a menos de cinco años del segundo Centenario, para concluir que seguimos ante dos Chiles: uno contento y autosuficiente, que goza de las riquezas conquistadas por el salitre de antaño, hoy por el buen precio del cobre y los altos índices macroeconómicos, siendo en ambos casos, (...) la brecha entre estos dos Chiles enorme. Compartirían además un desprestigio de la política, una mezcla entre la política y los negocios, sistemas electorales muy similares que no dan cuenta de la soberanía popular, y críticos que a pesar de ser acallados por los medios de comunicación, logran desnudar la miseria y explotación del Chile popular. Des que Ramon Llull va morir fa més de set-cents anys, sempre ha estat present, d’una manera o altra, en la cultura occidental. Fi­lòsofs, teòlegs, historiadors o, fins i tot, arquitectes i científics han partit del seu pensament per a construir noves teories i proveir-se d’eines de treball. Malgrat això, com tot gran personatge, també ha tingut detractors que s’han oposat amb vehemència a la divul­gació dels seus llibres i han arribat a demanar-ne la prohibició. Les aportacions aplegades en El (...) llegat de Ramon Llull mostren vessants diferents tant de l’obra del pensador mallorquí com de la difusió del lul·lisme, en una visió que comprèn múltiples discipli­nes i que obre noves perspectives d’anàlisi. Una de las principales aportaciones del siglo XII fue lo que M.-D. Chenu llamó l'éveil de la conscience, que implicaba la afirmación de la subjetividad a través del conocimiento de sí mismo. Artífices de este "despertar" fueron Pedro Abelardo y San Bernardo.

Le premier cycle de diffusion internationale du tango, dans les années immédiatement antérieures à la Grande Guerre, a eu Paris pour épicentre et les milieux aristocratiques et mondains de la capitale française comme lieu privilégié et premier d’inscription sociale. Un fort engouement pour la « nouvelle danse»s’ensuivit, ce qu’on appelle à l’époque « tangomanie»s’installa et, avec elle, sont nées des polémiques opposant partisans et adversaires d’une danse venue d’ailleurs et aux accents sexuels troubles. C’est ainsi en tout cas qu’elle est (...) perçue, au croisement de deux axes de réception principaux : érotisme et exotisme. Or ils sont étroitement liés. On en examinera les figures et leurs interactions dans la construction d’une image publique du tango promise à une réappropriation au-delà du seul contexte parisien et à une longue postérité qui se prolonge, à certains égards, jusqu’à aujourd’hui. Un itinéraire est proposé pour comprendre la réception de Petrus Ramus dans la pensée catholique, puisqu’il s’agit d’un sujet totalement inexploré : 1) 1545-1585 (stade de compréhension et d’absorption des idées de Ramus), 2) 1585-1640 (époque du combat apologétique, confrontation et éclectisme), 3) 1640-1670 (période d’étude et de discussion détaillée des auteurs scolastiques et des rationalistes), et 4) après 1670 (époque de suspension et de dissolution progressive de l’intérêt pour les œuvres de Ramus). La réception de Ramus dans les œuvres (...) de Lalemandet, Mersenne, Sorel, Gassendi et Caramuel est particulièrement étudiée, ainsi que l’influence de Ramus sur les jésuites. On conclut à une réception très différente. Les auteurs les plus aristotéliciens (Mas, Raynaud...) étaient absolument contre La Ramée, alors que d’autres avaient une position plus éclectique (Lalemandet, Caramuel), d’autres estimaient son travail (Mersenne, Gassendi) et certains ont formulé un jugement très élogieux (Sorel). The aim of this paper is focused on presenting the method of historical analysis built by Michel Foucault in his book Histoire de la Folie à l’Âge Classique as a “History of the Other”. Such term appears for the first time at Les Mots et les Choses’s Preface, in which Foucault analyses his method in the quoted book on madness (but also in La Naissance de la Clinique). In this sense, firstly we have to verify the hypothesis of this relation (...) between Foucault’s archeological method as a Thought of the Otherness, precisely concerning to that “Other History” proposed by the philosopher. Secondly, we need to analyse specifically Histoire de la Folie as a privileged work, as far as the approach on the relation with the other is concerned. KEY WORDS – Archeology of knowledge. History. Este artigo propõe a discussão da educação escolar tomando como ponto de partida a burocracia, a racionalidade e o conceito de desencantamento do mundo proposto por Max Weber. Por fim, discutimos os impactos para a subjetividade dos principais envolvidos no processo educacional – professor e aluno – para sinalizar possíveis movimentos que tornem mais dinâmica as relações humanas na educação institucionalizada.

In this paper, I aim to discuss New Political Economy as a label for the economic analysis of politics, in the English language. The term 'political economy' itself, although it has ceased to be the preferred term by which economists refer to their discipline, it is still being used by a variety of scholars, especially for interdisciplinary research with political science, international relations and other social sciences. Marxist- inspired social scientists also have a claim on the term 'political economy'. The (...) term gained relevance again with economists, in the 1950s, thanks to various critiques of orthodox economics, especially to the theory of economic policy and to economic planning. They ignored issues of political economy, such as the self- interest of politicians. The public choice movement revived these issues by applying rational choice theory to politics and preferred the label “public choice” to designate its movement. Scholars and traditions not affiliated with the public choice movement prefer the label '(new) political economy' to refer to their own economic analysis of politics. The search for a proper label is still ongoing, but they show how they can differentiate their objectives and affiliations. (shrink)
